My hands still faintly smelled like bleach when I heard the Governor say I no longer had a job. It didn’t matter that our staff worked extra hard disinfecting any and everything people came in contact with. It didn’t matter what actions we took it would all turn out to be not enough.
In a matter of days I became a stay-at-home mother that home schools her children. This wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for the “New Year, new you” motto I acquired. But alas, it wouldn’t be the first time my life had taken a drastic turn and I would imagine it won’t be the last time either.
‘What are you going to do?’ Has become more common than a hello and the truth is I don’t know.
Is this a two week isolation or will it be longer? Two weeks I can handle, the pay cut forecast for long term isn’t something I’m prepared for. I’m sure my fellow co-workers with little birds in their nests agree the unknown has become scary.
The unchartered waters without a paddle may seem like a fools journey but if we jump ship what will that mean for the relationships we’ve cultivated?
I’m quarantined, sure, with all of my men; and if they drive me crazy well at least it will be something new and different. But what about the people that don’t have a house hold of noisy people living with them. The new norm is working from home without any social life? If the human being is a social creature and you take that away, force them into solitude what happens then?
Unfortunately I’m not willing to find out. My “Team Tuesday/Thursday” group is much too important to let a little virus get in the way. For now I’m setting up a group phone beer. A chance where we can still get together, check in during this insane time. It doesn’t matter to me if everyone drinks soda water or brandy waters, what matters is I know they are surviving.
I hope that this doesn’t last long. The patio season is upon us and I’m looking forward to friendly faces getting out and having a great time.
In the mean time, you’ll find me on a zoom video with my Team Tuesday, checking in and hanging out. It’s important to me to find a community and keep tabs on it.
Now if we could just get Lagunitas to sponsor it…
Keep healthy, stay safe and check in with your people.
Namaste, Jes xoxo
