Wind

Little Bits of Wisdom

The gentle breeze, a sound I love, always takes me back to a book from my childhood I still own.

“Who has seen
the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees

bow their heads,
The wind is passing by.”

As I sip my coffee, newly budded branches are happily dancing to the winds rhythm. Rays of sunlight shine through and the slight chill in the air makes it much easier to breath.

The only thing that could make this better is 25 degrees warmer, sitting outside and listening to the birds sing. I’m grateful it’s 20 degrees in mid March BUT with 15 mile per hour wind it’s too cold to sit outside in sandaled feet.

You might be thinking, ‘just wear socks’, but let’s be honest, bare feet are the best feet no matter the season.

Earthing might be the only trend I was NOT late to the party for.

There is a scene in Blue Crush where Anne Marie calls the surf line to see what the swells are like for surfing conditions that morning. The surf line indicates good conditions but to be sure she calls her friends cell phone, he lives in a tent on the beach and tells her the waves are poppin’ and she should get there right away.

Later on in the movie she gets called out by some mean girls in the bathroom. She ends up diving into the ocean in her fancy black cocktail dress. That scene always meant something different to me than what was showcased in the movie. I always thought she was looking at the sand on the bottom, judging how the current and waves would be for the surfing competition.

Every time I watched that movie, which was A LOT, I would always fantasize about knowing nature like that. Can you be observant enough to predict the weather?

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed that the squirrels are far more active the day/hours before a snow storm. They look like 4-year-olds that just had a triple shot of Starbucks expresso. They run around spastically tying up loose ends before they return home and bunker down.

In our yard the maple trees bud first in the spring.
Boxelder bugs are the zombies of insects, they never die.
The Woolly Bear caterpillars tend to travel in the same direction.
Once Snowdrop flowers bloom, the snow will be gone soon.

Lately, my attention is on the wind.

Paddle boarding is one of my favorite ways to enjoy the lakes. The wind can either make your paddle relaxing or the most intense upper body workout OF ALL TIME. I’ve come off the lake with whitecaps in the distance, arms shaking from the paddle and still have to muster the energy to load my board up.

Knowing the wind, could upgrade my paddling game.

With the flag outside my office window I’ve been trying to learn wind speeds…. at least the Eastern and Western winds. Since my bestie and I usually paddle from East to West this will definitely help us! Once the lake thaws I hope to understand and guess the wind speeds enough to know if it’s a going to be a relaxing paddle or a WORKOUT.

It would be REALLY nice if I could predict how long until a storm rolls in, last year we almost got caught.

In the meantime, while the ice remains, I’ll be day dreaming of the golden hour paddles…

How about you?
